Redeveloping San Pedro’s former courthouse property was complicated — but still moving forward

Construction is almost ready to begin on what will be an 8-story, residential-commercial development newly branded as the Acqua Via at 505 S. Centre St. in downtown San Pedro. The corner at Centre and Sixth streets was the site of a former courthouse demolished several years ago. The 300 apartments will be designated for 20% for low-income residents.
Among the first pieces of work will be to remove the foundation of the old courthouse and surface parking lots, kept in place to hold down the dust on the cleared site.From the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and now with high construction costs, staff shortages and an uncertain economy with rising interest rates, the challenges have been many, he said.
