Commonwealth Games can learn from London 2012 errors and boost grassroots sport, says experts

The trust’s chief executive, Ali Oliver, said there needed to be “clear accountability to drive up activity levels, health and well-being of children across all age groups”.Birmingham Connect

Ms Oliver added: “There have been small wins from London 2012. The School Games, which is a Sport England National Lottery funded programme, has inspired and transformed. “Promises made were allowed to drift and holding the Government to account over the promises post-2012 just never happened,” says Andy Reed, founder of the Sports Think Tank. “We fear that Birmingham 2022 could go a similar way.”

The NAO said the Government had learned from London 2012 that major sports events “tend to have an impact on already active people, and it has therefore shifted towards a more targeted approach to tackling inactivity”. The Commonwealth Games is trying to avoid the same pitfalls, he said. “There are innovative pilot projects in place with sports such as British Wrestling and British Cycling aiming to use social media and young people generated content to inspire and engage.

“It also transformed public perceptions of disability, creating more opportunities for disability sports, as well as community engagement with volunteering.”
