A final draft is expected to go to council’s next full meeting later this month.Photo by City of SaskatoonOnce a set of guiding principles are established, city staff will develop a district plan for the area around the arena and convention facilities, including streets, plazas and other public spaces. The district plan will also encompass the transportation network around the site, and underground and surface utilities and upgrades.
Other cities have in recent years built new arena and convention buildings using novel funding tools. For example, funding sources to build Rogers Place in 2014 included the use of new parking revenues generated by the project and $125 million funded through a surcharge placed on tickets to events at the facility.
Should a funding strategy be approved, council would then be asked to provide input before a detailed design process and construction.commissioned by the boards of TCU Place and SaskTel Centre advising that both facilities are near the end of their useful lives. Later that year, council voted to have city staff focus on the downtown core to host an event and entertainment district anchored by a new arena and convention centre.
