A member of a city crew cuts up a tree in Saskatoon’s Forest Grove neighbourhood. City council’s environment committee on Monday endorsed a new 10-year plan guiding the management of the city’s trees.Parks department project manager Jeff Boone answered questions from the committee about the effort to develop a tree protection bylaw. He said staff are in early discussions with property developers as they figure out how a new bylaw would fit in with existing permitting and development processes.

Crilly said the city’s urban forestry group has not always reviewed tree-planting plans in new communities, and is working on making sure it has “a seat at the table” in the future. Crilly noted there are talks ongoing with the federal government and other partners about funding sources beyond city coffers, where possible.Committee members voted to recommend that council approve a process to find $640,000 needed for the new green cart program for organic waste.
