As intersecting crises and pressures come to a head, new leadership provides the opportunity for a new beginning, a new understanding of what a model urban school district could be, and a new commitment to collaboration, shared decision-making and inclusion.
Our new superintendent will arrive at a moment when public education is under renewed attack in the form of the expansion of charter schools and support for voucher bills in the Legislature, moves to ban books and curriculum in which our students see themselves represented, and attempts to censor, bully and intimidate teachers out of teaching the truth.Our new superintendent must have a proven track record of collaboration and shared decision-making.
Finally, we need a superintendent for whom this is a dream job, not a steppingstone to a bigger district or political office. Our school district deserves a long-term partner to drive change in service of educational equity, and racial and economic justice.This moment can be a turning point for San Antonio ISD — a moment when we steer away from privatization, concentrated decision-making, standardized testing and anti-union, anti-worker policymaking.
