Recognizing our city’s interwoven history with trees, San Antonio’s arboretum should be a place of pastoral wonder.

We have learned that a sponsoring organization called Arboretum San Antonio has set in motion steps whereby the Brooks City Base Authority will acquire 170 acres of the old Republic Golf course site along the Salado Creek and accessible from S.E. Military Drive.

The word comes from the Latin word “arbor” meaning “tree” and the suffix “-ētum,” meaning “place." Taken together, “a place of trees.” A more complete answer is an arboretum is an open space, much like a park or large garden, but specifically composed of the carefully selected and preserved trees of a region.

The oldest arboretums in the U.S. are more than 150 years. They are home to historic and famous trees, some many hundreds of years old and landmarks for historical periods or events. They function as places where the young and old, people from all walks of life, can express respect for our natural environment and can feel their own link to the chain of life.Arboretum San Antonio

• The logic of recognizing the trees of our region is perfectly in sync with the history of our origins as a human settlement. Native American indigenous people selected campsites in the shade of San Antonio’s cypress and pecan trees. Spanish explorers noted in their journals their amazement in finding an oasis of water and trees that led to the building of five missions in the area.
