Comal ISD names elementary after 2 fallen New Braunfels Marines
Elementary 19, which will be on Texas 46 south of I-35, will be Farias-Spitzer Elementary. John Felix Farias and Thomas Spitzer played football together at Canyon High School in New Braunfels.The two died in Afghanistan’s restive Helmand province about three years apart. Sgt. Spitzer died at age 23 in 2014. Lance Cpl. Farias died at age 20 in 2011.
During Monday’s school board meeting, Treasurer Tim Hennessee recalled taking his two daughters to stand along Highway 46 when Spitzer’s body was returned home. “They lost their lives early in defense of us,” Hennessee said, his voice cracking. “It was an honor to be there. It was an honor to see him go by.”
