A Pasadena man found a card tucked away with his Amazon order offering a $20 payment in return for a glowing review — as long as he didn't tell anyone he'd been bribed.

Amazon is very clear about the product reviews on its site — they’re not allowed to be rigged or bogus.Pasadena resident Ben Shutman, 37, discovered this after receiving a wall stud finder he’d ordered from Amazon.

Good reviews are a key component of product rankings on Amazon, which means sellers have a powerful incentive to generate the best reviews possible — either through customer satisfaction or more dubious methods. Shutman is no stranger to this world. He told me he writes code for e-commerce sites. And that’s why he wanted to share his experience with others: to make sure everyone is aware of the danger.Homder’s website

“We have clear policies for both reviewers and selling partners that prohibit abuse of our community features, and we suspend, ban and take legal action against those who violate these policies,” the spokesman said, requesting that his name be withheld, which is how spokespeople for tech companies typically like to be quoted.

Of the more than 340 customer ratings for the product on Amazon’s site as of Monday, 78% were five-star reviews. Fair point. The cynic in me says it’s entirely possible whoever’s behind this might renege on the offer after giving a customer the run-around, all the while basking in the glow of that five-star review.
