Ernie Cowan's Outdoors column

Tiny raindrops on the pale green leaves of the agave glistened in the morning sunlight like precious sapphires on the most magnificent royal crown.

The blooming of the foxtail agave is the plant’s final act. It flowers only once in its last year of life, but thousands of blossoms ensure many seeds for new plants to grow. Maybe the signal was the warmth of the sunlight, but today the agave buds were beginning to open. The first 3 feet at the base of the long “foxtails” were covered with pale, greenish-yellow flowers.Bees were busy harvesting pollen and nectar, and Anna’s hummingbirds were darting from blossom to blossom.Taking time to sit awhile and observe nature can be very rewarding. Often, as we pass through wild areas, the animals will fall silent or dash away and we don’t see what’s really going on.

Getting a closer look with my telephoto lens, I could clearly see the bees moving from flower to flower, collecting nectar and pollen, two important dietary items for them. As bees enter flowers, pollen sticks to their antennae, heads and upper body. As it accumulates, the female worker bees brush the pollen into the little sacks with their legs that have comb-like structures on them.As bees move from flower to flower, they are also giving life by transferring pollen needed to help plants reproduce.
