The lefty scored nearly half of the Wave’s goals last season to claim her first scoring title in the National Women’s Soccer League. With Morgan finishing off chances and NWSL coach of the year Casey Stoney shaping the defense, the Wave became the first expansion team to reach the playoffs in the league’s 10-year history.
Since Wave fans last saw her in person — in the Wave’s home playoff game Oct. 16, her tie-breaking goal thrilled a vocal crowd of 26,215 — Morgan has maintained her crisp play. She contributed to U.S. effort against Nigeria, Germany and Brazil four different American cities. An incredible 12 months? Yes, said Ellis, using the word three times.-best player in the world, but not to Ellis. “I have to say no,” she said.
At 30, Morgan gave birth to her first child, daughter Charlie Elena Carrasco. This was in May 2020, 10 months after the U.S. won its fourth World Cup and second in a row, making Ellis the first coach to lift the trophy twice. If motherhood pushed the pause button on Morgan’s career, it may have conferred an unexpected soccer bonus after Morgan re-immersed herself in intense competition.
“It’s definitely helped me to enjoy soccer and appreciate soccer a little bit more,” said the second-year San Diegan, whose husband, Servando Carrasco, grew up in Tijuana and Coronado and played in Major League Soccer. “It absolutely balances things a little bit more. I feel like as a mom I step off the field and I’m not thinking about the goals I could’ve scored or the game we could’ve won. I’m thinking about my daughter and my family, and I’m enjoying the moments as I take them.
