El Cajon's Joe Musgrove is proud of gritty SDSU hoops team. Can star-laden Padres go the extra step?
At the Padres’ ballpark near the main ticket booths, you’ll see the club’s 2023 marketing slogan in bright letters:No, the Padres aren’t asking fans to bring actual gold to 19 Tony Gwynn Drive, although if you have a spare nugget or two, they’ll take it, the player payroll being what it is.Turns out, Padres marketeers were impossibly prescient when they coined #BRINGTHEGOLD.
A lopsided disadvantage in star talent is not a problem the Padres are likely to face, thanks to Peter Seidler approving Major League Baseball’s third-highest payroll. The $249 million investment isn’t a guarantee of success, but it’s not by happenstance that the Padres display photos of Manny Machado, Xavier Bogaerts, Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. next to their ticket windows.
“I’ve been in that spot in those championship games,” said the Padres pitcher. “Sometimes, the game speeds up and it’s just reaction. You just do what you can do in the moment.”
