Longtime champion of Don Coryell knows it was no passing fancy to support San Diego's king of fancy passing
Its engines were running like mad, but for once — and for much too long — it was stuck on the tarmac.
I was a Hall of Fame voter for years, so I came out of the room pleased and disappointed. But this became pretty much a sure thing in 2022, when Coryell was named the only nominee in the “contributor” category. He came to San Diego State in 1961 as a run-first coach , but evolved into the modern master of the college passing game. He advanced it to “Air Coryell,” with creative minds such as Ernie Zampese and Joe Gibbs working as test pilots. Nobody had seen anything like it, and I often sat in the press box amazed, watching defenses scramble hopelessly.
Don said, “Hi, Hank,” and went on to explain that he’d taken the trash down the steep driveway from his Mount Helix home, got out of his vehicle, and realized he hadn’t put it in park.
