UPDATE: The Akerman fire in Colorado Springs Thursday killed one woman as it ripped through a mobile home park
The Akerman fire, one of the two grass fires that broke out in Colorado Springs Thursday, killed one woman as it ripped through a mobile home park, destroying eight mobile homes and forcing evacuations for around 1,000 people.The wind-fueled blaze has since been fully contained, firefighters said.
The Akerman fire brought heavy smoke and flames towering more than 50 feet to the Skylark Mobile Home Park, where the fire was contained to the neighborhood, with no injuries reported. Firefighters fully contained the blaze at 30 acres late Thursday. Update from a few of the grass fires today- Akerman Fire-100% contained/30 acres. CSFD will be out all night patrolling for any flare ups. Alturas Fire – 15% contained/182 acres. FF’s will remain on scene to patrol for any flare ups and hotspots.The Alturas fire in Colorado Springs is now 15% contained, having burned through 182 acres as of late Thursday, the Colorado Springs Fire Department reported.Thursday, but all operations have resumed to normal.
All outbound flights from the Colorado Springs airport were canceled about 7 p.m. Thursday, according to airport officials. People at the airport were told to leave about 6:40 p.m., and inbound flights were canceled about 5:30 p.m.
