College Initiatives For 2020, Part I: Haverford College's new financial aid program pays the 1st year of student loan obligations for eligible graduates in the 2019 class

, under the new program, 12 Haverford graduates will be the first to receive the debt relief, ranging from $900 to $1,500 apiece. They will also be eligible to apply for two more years of loan repayment.

They can’t have access to other loan-deferral options, and they must be unemployed or on a “low income trajectory due to choice of profession.” The annual repayment amounts can be funded through modest endowments, thereby bringing the underwriting of the program within reach of a larger number of donors;
