The calm before the storm is a common phrase. What about the calm after the storm? The latter phrase could accurately describe Week 5 in college football as there's not one major juicy matchup following a weekend of three big showdowns. The biggest game involves one of the teams featured last week - Notre Dame - as the No. 10 Irish host No. 18 Virginia in one of their five annual meetings with ACC schools. Notre Dame isn't dead in the College Football Playoff race if it can rebound quickly from the Georgia loss. The Cavaliers have been under the radar for the first four weeks, but this is an opportunity to show they're a contender in the ACC.
Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet runs after a catch against the Georgia Bulldogs in the second quarter at Sanford Stadium. The other matchup of ranked opponents sees two one-loss teams from the Pac-12 - Washington and Southern California - face off. It's conceivable, especially for the Huskies, that the winner could work itself into the playoff mix. But a lot will have to go right, starting with a big win Saturday.
Other games to watch include No. 7 Auburn hosting dangerous Mississippi State. No. 11 Penn State pays a visit to Maryland. And No. 19 Utah and Washington State meet with both looking to bounce back after disappointing defeats last week.
