One told an undercover police officer he's 'not greedy'
A collector who has been accused of an illegal plot to sell historic coins worth £766,000 told an undercover police officer "I'm not greedy."
The defendants were on trial at Durham Crown Court and both deny separate charges of possessing the criminal property, the PA news agency reports. Jurors were told that 46-year-old Best took three ancient coins to a meeting at a Durham hotel.He said he thought he was meeting with a metal expert, who was acting for a broker and working for a wealthy American buyer. However, the intermediaries were really undercover officers and Best of South View in Bishop Auckland was arrested in his hotel room.
On the second day of the trial, Matthew Donkin, prosecuting, played audio recordings of phone calls between Best and undercover officers. These were to set up the meeting in May 2019 that was supposedly taking place to validate the coins.
