Post-punk band Cola's new single is the perfect final act for their 'Deep in View' era. Watch the music video for 'Keys Down If You Stay' here:
In 2022, Tim Darcy and Ben Stidworthy, formerly of the band Ought, and US Girls and The Weather Station drummer Evan Cartwright joined forces to strike up a new project called Cola. They put out, which was, effectively, one of the most compelling yet minimalistic debut albums of the year. Songs like “Water Table” and “Blank Curtain” set them apart from the tunes they were building in Ought.was widely praised, and for good reason.
Now, they’ve made a studio recording of “Keys Down If You Stay,” which has endured as a live staple for the band since their formation. It’s an anti-climax track that holds steady at a meditative pace. Darcy’s vocals are dipped in a near-spoken word sheen, as Stidworthy applies some tasty bass behind Darcy’s looping guitar. “Wading out, like a zero in the water / Remainder too strained / Knee-deep and straight out / Keys down if you stay,” Darcy sings.
