Cobbled lane of cottages is like another world - but only minutes from Manchester city centre
Sitting at the western edge of the Peak District, the picturesque village of Marple Bridge has long been regarded as one of the best spots in the region to explore the great outdoors and nearby countryside. While it might feel like a world away from Manchester, it is only a 25-minute train ride away from the city centre along the Hope Valley Line.
Once you’ve passed the Royal Scot pub and Town Street Fryer further down, it's easy to carry on up the road leading to Mellor, an ancient village surrounded by rolling hills boasting uninterrupted views over the Cheshire Plain - and just minutes away from the Peak District National Park. However, should you be taking a stroll through Marple Bridge's village, there’s a beautiful street of cottages and cobbles just past the main row of shops - one that feels like another world.
What remains of the Mill, which was destroyed by fire in 1892, and its surrounding buildings - including stables, farms and coach houses - has since been taken over by the natural world, making it a truly fascinating site to explore. Visitors can also use the lakes for fishing and canoeing, while the area is also crisscrossed with walking and cycling trails, many of which lead up to Strines and Marple. Up in Marple, there’s a number of cafes, restaurants, pubs and amenities, but the village also boasts the Locks - an impressive flight of 16 locks, which is one of the steepest flights in Britain.
