The Aquatec, Sir Matt Busby centre and John Smith pool could all close in a £4.7m cost-cutting measure by North Lanarkshire Council
Five swimming pools, seven sports facilities, seven libraries and 20 community centres are set to be closed by North Lanarkshire Council to save £4.7 million.

Libraries earmarked for closure are Abronhill, Cleland, Moodiesburn, Newarthill, New Stevenston, Stepps and Viewpark; while the mobile library service is also described as “in scope for consideration” with its three vehicles being “prone to mechanical issues” and the report stating: “The cost of replacing all three is likely to be prohibitive.”
Council leader Jim Logue described the plans as “very unpalatable” and said: “We have done everything possible to protect services, but with £64m to save over the next three years, we are now in the realm of making decisions that no councillor would wish to take.”
