Paul George scores 26 points, including the tiebreaking three-point play with 37 seconds left, as the Clippers erase a 13-point deficit in the final five minutes for a stunning 119-117 win.
LOS ANGELES — Clippers coach Tyronn Lue has insisted in recent days that his team is trending in the right direction. There might have been a few missteps along the way, even a couple of stumbles, but he believes they are making progress even if recent results didn’t always show it.
The Clippers competed Monday until the final minutes, scoring eight consecutive points to pull within four, 112-108. Terance Mann then stole a pass and drove the court for a dunk. Norman Powell followed with a layup and was fouled. He made the free throw to tie the score at 112. The Cavs didn’t go away quietly, making the Clippers sweat until Kevin Love’s 78-footer at the buzzer hit the rim and bounced away.
“PG rallied us together and said we got a lot of time left at five minutes to get the game back under control,” Powell said. “And I think from that point on we picked up our physicality offensively, defensively being locked in, being physical when they were coming together, trying to search out mismatches and not giving them what they wanted and offensively.
But the Cavs weren’t looking to leave L.A. with a loss. Eventually, Cleveland, which defeated the Lakers a day earlier, did a better job bottling up Clippers center Ivica Zubac and took control of the defensive boards to go on a 14-4 run at the start of the fourth quarter for a 101-92 lead with 9:05 left.
“This is a great win, great win,” George said. “A team-boosting win against a really good Cleveland team. It is a well-put-together team and a well-coached team. That was great for our composure late into the game, to find a way to scratch and claw our way back into the game and then we were able to close it out.”
