New York City beat a 50-year-old record Monday for the latest date into the winter season without a measurable snow
CLEVELAND, Ohio — It’s been a dry month when it comes to snow in the Cleveland area, with only 10.5 inches recorded by the National Weather Service as of Monday, about 8 inches less than normal. The Big Apple beat a 50-year-old record Monday for the latest date into the winter season without a measurable snow, according to the NWS New York. While some snow has fallen, it hasn’t even amounted to 0.1 inch.
When looking at snowfall totals and temperature records for the region over time, “we’re starting to see in the last 20 years a consistent warming that tells us that there is a climate issue here,” New York state climatologist Mark Wysocki tells the Associated Press. Cleveland is in no danger of setting that kind of record, but the region is lagging. The city averages 18.4 inches in January, according to the Weather Service. It set a record in 1978 with 42.8 inches. In 1932, only 0.6 inch fell.
