The Cleveland Museum of Natural History will close temporarily as it gears up for the unveiling of a new Visitor Hall.

Still to be completed is the construction and installation of 55,000 square feet of exhibit space in a new wing added to the Wade Oval side of the museum. Completion is expected next year.

Elements of the project scheduled beyond 2024 include renovations of storage, research and education spaces on floors below the museum’s main exhibit areas. The museum’s announcement said it will host a special preview of the new Visitor Hall on Saturday, October 14. On Sunday, October 15, admission will be free for residents of Cleveland and East Cleveland, thanks for a $3 million grant from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation. Sundays are called “On Sunday, October 8, while the museum is closed, the staff will host a free event from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. called “Animals in the Oval,’’ a reference to the museum’s location in Wade Oval.

Museum Educator Josh Avsec will participate, along with several “animal ambassadors.” Museum educators will also provide opportunities to experience animal pelts, skulls, and fossils.
