CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Metroparks Zoo witnessed the circle of life on Wednesday, mourning the passing of an elephant and celebrating the birth of a baby gorilla within minutes of each other.
Willy, who arrived at the zoo in 2011, was an African Elephant, the largest and heaviest land animal on Earth. Indeed, Willy was big, standing at 11 feet at the shoulder and weighing about 13,000 pounds. But at 44 years old, he had been dealing with health issues for several months, and, so, the decision was made to humanely euthanize the animal.The zoo welcomed the newborn Western lowland gorilla around noon on July 19.
