The festival said in a statement that it removed its Russian films from its initial lineup, due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
on Monday morning, it showcased filmmakers from around the globe. But one country notably missing from the mix was Russia.
“The Cleveland International Film Festival joins with cultural and art institutions around the world in standing in solidarity with Ukraine and its sovereign people. Because of that, we have made the difficult decision to not screen any films in CIFF46 that are produced by Russia-based companies or funded in any way by the Russian Federation,” the festival shared in a statement.
“The unlawful and brutal actions of the Russian government are being challenged across the globe,” CIFF shared in a statement. “While we embrace artistic freedom and have not based our decision on the content or storytellers of any particular film, we must recognize that freedom itself now hangs in the balance in Ukraine.”
In its petition, the film academy specifically asked global film festivals to not screen any films created in cooperation with the Russian Federation.
