Without a marquee addition via free agency or trade, the roster is loaded with players who got valuable experience at the major league level last year and have something to prove as the season gets underway.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — After a 99-day lockout and the shortest spring training in recent memory, the Cleveland Guardians are set to begin their season in Kansas City this week.
Familiar faces rejoin the club including manager Terry Francona, who returns after missing the final 63 games of last season with hip and toe surgeries. Cleveland will again be one of the youngest teams in the major leagues with eight players making an opening day roster for the first time. Francona’s staff will have to balance practicing patience and teaching the game with pursuing victories in order to return to the postseason after missing out in 2021.
Below is a position-by-position breakdown of the starters, backups and key minor league reserves that will see action for Cleveland in its first season under the new Guardians franchise name.
