A Cleveland woman charged with murder after a deputy medical examiner used a controversial test to help determine the baby she had at her Hiram College dorm room was alive when she put him in a trash bag was sentenced to at least 10 years in prison.

RAVENNA, Ohio -- A Cleveland woman charged with murder after a deputy medical examiner used a controversial test to help determine the baby she had at her Hiram College dorm room was alive when she put him in a trash bag was sentenced Tuesday to at least 10 years in prison.

Reddick’s sentencing came during a Tuesday hearing in which Assistant Portage County Prosecutor Stephen Michniak did not ask Doherty to impose a prison sentence. Instead, he left the decision up to the judge. The father of Reddick’s child, who spoke during Tuesday’s hearing via Zoom video, said only that he was “affected” by what happened. He did not advocate for a prison sentence.

Doherty cited Reddick’s supportive family, which is usually a plus for defendants seeking probation, in explaining why she believed Reddick deserved prison. Reddick gave birth at a dorm at the college, then placed the baby in a garbage bag with bedding and pieces of her clothing. She put the bag in a trash can and a cleaning crew found it the next morning.

Reddick continued telling doctors she was never pregnant for several days. Doctors eventually had Reddick committed to the hospital’s psychiatric ward for several days. The deputy state medical examiner for Kentucky and Tennessee’s chief medical examiner each authored reports on Reddick’s behalf finding that there was not sufficient evidence in Reddick’s case to determine for certain whether the child was born alive.
