If so, history shows that he’s right to worry, particularly about the impact on suburban women, a persuadable demographic of swing voters in our deeply polarized electorate. Republicans have been making significant headway with suburban women on pressing issues such as crime, schools and inflation.Meanwhile, Democrats have been in the dumps and divided among themselves over what to do next.

President Joe Biden immediately declared that “Roe will be on the ballot in November,” and a new poll showed most Americans agreed. You don’t have to believe the Times’ account to see how Trump has good reason to worry about a possible backlash, particularly from suburban women. Yet, without explanation, the conservative majority that Trump, with valuable assistance from Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, built on the high court put out an unsigned order in December allowing the law to go into effect. So much for the Grand Old Party’s long-argued principles of limited government and avoidance of “government overreach.”
