Sterlin Holmesly, longtime editorial page editor of these pages, led with grace, vision and modesty.

In 1993, Sterlin Holmesly, former editorial page editor here, took a chance on Cary Clack, a young unknown writer. For more than 20 years, until his retirement in 1995, Sterlin Holmesly was the editorial editor of these pages. It was the capstone of a long and distinguished journalism career that began when he was a correspondent for the Amarillo Globe-News while in college at West Texas State University and included reporting from around the world.

There were hundreds, if not thousands, of dates more significant to Sterlin’s career than Nov. 23, 1993, but none is more important to me because that’s the day I met him. After lunch, Bob took me on a tour of the paper, and I met Sterlin. He was tall and gracious with a deep voice that almost buried his West Texas accent. There was a dryness to his voice that was melodious. He invited me to submit more pieces and asked for my Social Security number. A few days later, I received a check in the mail for $100. Over the next few months, he paid me $100 for each commentary, until, in May, he offered me a column that began in June 1994.

Sterlin was one of the first people who “got” me as a writer, who understood that I was —his word, “unpredictable” — and had different interests, voices and styles I wanted to explore and should be given the latitude to do so.Submit a Letter to the Editor
