While Northern Ireland has been grappling with a cost-of-living crisis, Civil Servants at Stormont have spent almost half a million pounds on hotel stays in the 18 months following the collapse of the Executive, it can be revealed.
Among the trips undertaken by DAERA officials was a visit to a the self-styled "luxury" Galmont Hotel and Spa in Galway for a conference at a cost of £5,642 to the public purse. Officials in The Executive Office spent £90,350.50 on accommodation at a series of events around the world including gala dinners in New York, Chicago and Miami, visits to New York for screenings of the films Young Plato and Lyra alongside the premiere of the musical Good Vibrations.Conor Holohan, media campaign manager of the TaxPayers' Alliance called on officials to reflect on whether they feel these trips represent value for taxpayers.
"By their nature, these responsibilities occasionally require them to stay away from home, for example to attend meetings, site visits or continued professional development requirements.
