We need student organizers, not just student voters paid civicnation
As organizations and campuses around the country devote countless hours to planning and implementing civic engagement programming, we need to consider higher education’s obligation to not just help students vote but create learning opportunities for those students eager to make change in their community. I posit that our responsibility goes beyond turning out voters; we should also be turning out a new class of organizers with the skills and confidence to tackle issues dear to them.
Vote Oswego students support activities to increase civic learning, political engagement, and voter participation on campus.SUNY Oswego now houses its voter mobilization program in an advanced political science course entitled Vote Oswego.
Data collected over the last two election cycles indicates the project succeeds both pedagogically and as a campaign. Participants report an increase in their understanding of the complexity of campaigns, their confidence in analyzing information and troubleshooting, and their ability to perform campaign tactics. And, SUNY Oswego tripled its voter turnout rate from 2014 to 2018.
My ability to offer this credit-bearing experience reflects my somewhat unique position as a former organizer and political scientist familiar with the research on student civic engagement as well as campaigns and elections.
Through Vote Oswego and the collaboration with Votes & Ballots, I combine my organizing experience and pedagogical commitments to increase the likelihood that voter mobilization programs create organizers as well as voters. As part of drafting their 2020 voter mobilization plans, all colleges and universities should strategize about how their programming can equip interested students with citizenship skills that extend far beyond casting a ballot.
