City officials are banking that higher salaries will help fill dozens of positions at San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department, which has been plagued with staffing shortages.

At the end of July, Metro Health had 90 open positions, a vacancy rate of 16 percent — well above the city’s rate of 9.6 percent. There are 644 Metro Health positions in the proposed budget, up from the 512 last year. Almost 80 percent of the 132 new jobs make permanent the temporary employees recently hired, a spokeswoman said.
This year has seen more city employees leave their jobs than at any point in the last six years, City Manager Erik Walsh said.
