The results of Tuesday’s Seattle city council election will determine the future of the public safety policy in a city that is trying to get a handle on things.

The results of Tuesday’s Seattle city council election will determine the future of the public safety policy in a city that is trying to get a handle on violent crime, homelessness, and a police staffing crisis.

Seven seats on the nine-member council are up for election, which put incumbents on the defensive over their public safety records and challengers claiming the current council put the city on the wrong path.“No matter what side, left or right, that you stand on, everybody wants public safety. People are tired of what’s going on here, the homeless crisis exploding,” said Jim Fuda, a public safety advisor and executive director of Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound.

Most members on the current city council were in their positions during the ‘defund the police’ efforts of 2020, which Fuda believes is still impacting the city’s ability to recruit and retain police officers. received council support for hiring bonuses to replace some of the more than 600 police officers who have left the city since 2020.“I shouldn’t have to do American Ninja Warrior over people and paraphernalia. We need to do better for people and people suffering from these debilitating drug dependency issues," council candidate Rob Saka told KOMO News in a profile interview ahead of the election.
