Half of City Council joined the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association Friday in urging voters to reject Prop A.

San Antonio District 9 Councilman John Courage speaks during a press conference against Prop A in front of City Hall on Friday, April 14, 2023. Other elected officials and members of the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association attended the press conference. The head of San Antonio’s police union stood on the steps of City Hall flanked by five council members Friday morning.

Council members John Courage, Manny Peláez, Melissa Cabello Havrda, Adriana Rocha Garcia and Phyllis Viagran, who represent Districts 9, 8, 6, 4 and 3, respectively, chimed in about the harm the ballot measure would inflict. They believe it would increase crime — especially graffiti, a misdemeanor not included in the San Antonio Police Department’s cite-and-release policy — and hurt businesses.“Prop A stands for Prop Absurd. That is an absurd, unacceptable situation,” Peláez said.

It’s a departure from two years earlier when another police-related proposition was on the ballot. Prop B, which failed by less than 3 percentage points, would have stripped the union of its collective bargaining rights.
