Nottinghamshire Police increased their presence due to fears of trouble caused by an online prank
Disorder was seemingly avoided in Nottingham city centre after police increased their presence due to fears of trouble caused by an online prank. Nottinghamshire Police put a dispersal order in place for Thursday afternoon following large gatherings of schoolchildren earlier this week.
The force said the gatherings were believed to be linked to a prank where pupils remove the school tie of a pupil from a different school before posting it on social media. In messages sent by schools, parents were told pupils had been assaulting each other and burning ties. They warned of "mass disorder" and told pupils to avoid the city centre. Chief Inspector Karl Thomas said extra patrols would take place and people could be asked to leave the area as part of the dispersal order. While Nottinghamshire Live was in the city centre there was no sign of trouble or large gatherings. John Lees, a city centre inspector, said there would be a "very high bar" for kids to be ordered to leave the area.
"They would have to demonstrate anti-social behaviour or threat of violence," he said. "We're just here to reassure the community, we've got the power to disperse if we see large groups of youths causing violence. But at the moment everyone is happy. We're conscious of what's happened over the last few days.
"There were quite a lot of kids in the city centre yesterday. Kids will be kids but we've got to make sure they don't cross over into anti-social behaviour."
