We chat with AmericaTheBeautifulSeries' aerial cinematographer Greg Wilson, who worked with his team at V/SPEED to capture the incredible sights and habitats in NatGeo's new docuseries, now streaming on disneyplus:

America the Beautiful, now streaming on Disney+, is the latest docuseries from the award-winning producers of Planet Earth and the Disneynature films. Arriving just in time to celebrate the nation's independence day, the new series explores the natural diversity of the North American continent through never-before-seen aerial footage. Furthermore, it dives into the lives of the people and communities doing their best to conserve the beautiful habitats that make up the land.

It ended up being through photography that I found a new voice, and a tool that pretty much led me to where I am now. But it was a profound change in direction that led me to potentially go to Afghanistan and Iraq as a combat journalist, and then I transitioned out of that mode after meeting some photo editors at National Geographic Magazine and at Time. I moved over and started shooting a lot more natural history and animals and things like that.

When you were approached by Mark and decided to do this series, what is that time investment like? How do you prepare to discover these new perspectives and apply your technology and your artistry to the project? When you have such a huge scale project like this, how much is already pre-planned of what you're trying to get? And then how much unexpected footage or even species that weren't planned to be part of it get introduced?

Greg Wilson: Like I said earlier, I have a background in the pursuit of big weather and storms, and the lightning research that we were doing. In 2014, the majority of the team that I was traveling with was killed in El Reno, Oklahoma in a tornado. It was a profound experience for me to go back into the big weather world with a target of tornadoes again, because that's what got those guys - and it was wrong place at the wrong time.
