San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said the decision to close freeway exits over Cinco de Mayo weekend “succeeded” in keeping the public safe, but the city needs to “acknowledge the voices…

San Jose officials on Monday defended their choice tofor much of Cinco de Mayo weekend, saying the move was necessary to preserve safety, even while others criticized it as “racist” and “blatantly unconstitutional.”

In a statement last week, Caltrans cited public safety and an “organized Cinco De Mayo march through downtown San Jose” as reasons for the closure, a sentiment that Aponte echoed and called “very frequent” for large events. A Caltrans spokesperson did not respond to repeated requests for comment from the Bay Area News Group. On Monday afternoon, Caltrans sent a statement saying in part that the department had responded to a request from San Jose police and the CHP and closed “several off-ramps as a precaution, for public safety and to reduce congestion” in the downtown area.

“As they have done in recent years, SJPD, Caltrans and CHP chose to close several freeway exits this weekend over concerns around traffic safety and congestion,” Mahan said in the statement. “This protocol is consistent not only with past Cinco de Mayo celebrations, but with other large gatherings in our city, including 408 Day, the Turkey Trot, Viva Calle, Veterans Day, and the 4th of July.”
