MORAGA — So this is how it ended. This is how an incredible era of Campolindo basketball fell one game short of the Open Division state championship game.
Instead of top-seeded Campo making the trip to Sacramento’s Golden1 Center to play Southern California champion Centennial-Corona on Saturday night for the Open state title, it’ll be third-seeded Modesto Christian. Mahaney nearly pulled off a Houdini act in the final 15.5 seconds. He made two free throws after Modesto Christian was assessed a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct, then sank a 3-pointer with just under 10 seconds left to cut what had been an eight-point deficit to three.
Even when things looked hopeless, Campo coach Steven Dyer said he believed that his team would somehow, someway survive, as it always had. The Moraga school had won 22 in a row since a December loss to a Texas powerhouse and 47 of 48.
