The facility will be built separately; parties extend negotiations as they weigh cost and design
The city of Chula Vista and San Diego State University have agreed that the film production studios that were once envisioned as a key part of a new Cinematic Arts Academic Center and Library will be built separately. And both parties agreed to extend negotiations through December to figure out how to fund and develop the studios.
“It’s unfortunate that it’s gotten to this point where initial concepts didn’t work out because it seems like it would’ve been easily avoidable if we were more involved,” said Brian Hu, associate professor of SDSU’s Television, Film and New Media program. The department is not “trying to get out of a broken home;” Hu said, it’s looking for additional room to accept more students, but it should be a place that’s worthwhile, he added. On average, the program has a 40 percent acceptance rate and about 500 students on the production end of things.
Faculty at Southwestern College’s Film, Television and Media Arts program also feel their feedback should be included, especially after SDSU’slast year that the two-year college would have access to the new center. They questioned why millions of dollars had already been invested in a project without discussions about how Southwestern College students would benefit.
And while informal discussions about partnerships have occurred, “whatever use we would have in that would have to go through a whole agreement process,” she added. “So, we’re not even there until the school actually gets built. Our involvement, I think, is pending the finalization of San Diego State and the city’s negotiation.”
