After his usual platelet donation in March, Dangkhoa Nguyen got a call from the American Red Cross: His white blood cell counts were alarmingly low.

Nearly every month for more than two decades, Chula Vista Fire Capt. Dangkhoa Nguyen has donated platelets.

“I hadn’t been sick in months, I felt really good, and had been at work for like eight days straight, which is uncommon — even for us,” he said. “So I was dumbfounded.” Nguyen got a job in finance in the Bay Area, but decided to make a career change after 9/11. “It kind of changed my perspective on the world,” he said. When he was hired at the Chula Vista Fire Department, he moved down to San Diego.

Chula Vista Fire Capt. Dangkhoa Nguyen and his family stand with Angela Miller, donor center coordinator for the Red Cross. As big Star Wars fans, the Nguyens’ mantra became “This is the way” — the Mandalorian creed — as a reminder to stay strong and that they would get through the uncertain times. “I think just seeing everyone support him at this time is a testament to how much he’s liked and respected,” Chula Vista firefighter Jed Burt said as he did yard work at the Nguyens’ house.

That care continued through his discharge from the hospital in May, where more than 100 supporters showed up in droves to surprise Nguyen.
