📉 Identifying as Christian in England and Wales has fallen to a record low, according to the latest results from the 2021 census
The Archbishop of York said the country had “left behind the era when many people almost automatically identified as Christian”, but that the census results were “not a great surprise”.
The Most Reverend Stephen Cottrell said: “The Christian church exists to share the good news of Jesus Christ, serve our neighbour and bring hope to a troubled world. That’s what we’ve done for 2,000 years, in times of war and peace; hardship and plenty; revival and decline and it’s what we must do now more than ever.”
Andrew Copson, chief executive of Humanists UK, said the results “mean the UK is almost certainly one of the least religious countries on Earth”. “One of the most striking things about these census results is how at odds the population is from the state itself. No state in Europe has such a religious set-up as we do in terms of law and public policy, while at the same time having such a non-religious population.”
The proportion of people describing themselves as Muslim rose from 4.9 per cent to 6.5 per cent and for Hindu increased from 1.5 per cent to 1.7 per cent. For Sikh, it increased from 0.8 per cent to 0.9 per cent and for Buddhist, from 0.4 per cent to 0.5 per cent.
