BEIJING—Mainland Chinese angry at the antigovernment protests roiling Hong Kong for months have a new poster boy: a Chinese state-media reporter assaulted by Hong Kong protesters.

Fu Guohao, a reporter for the Global Times, a nationalistic Communist Party-run newspaper, has become an overnight sensation. He is being hailed as a hero on Chinese social media after he was tied up and beaten by protesters as Tuesday’s demonstrations at Hong Kong’s airport descended into violence.
