China’s Evergrande Group, once the second-largest property developer in the country, filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy protection in Manhattan on Thursday.Evergrande stressed in a statement that it was not filing for bankruptcy, but was instead performing “a normal step in the overseas restructuring procedure.
” Evergrande previously defaulted on its debt in 2021, shocking the Chinese real estate market and triggering defaults at other builders. It has since negotiated debt restructuring in Hong Kong, the Cayman Islands, and the British Virgin Islands to avoid defaulting on $340 billion in debt. Much of the debt Evergrande owes to investors is held in U.S. dollar-denominated bonds governed by New York state law.
