Layla's first day at secondary school was spent in isolation before her grandmother came to take her home
A school sent children home on their first day back after the summer holidays because they were wearing shoes by Vivienne Westwood and Nike. Melissa Pope said her 11-year-old daughter Layla Thomson was sent home during her first day of secondary school for wearing the popular Vivienne Westwood slip-on shoes.
"The only thing it's done today is disrupt a whole school. She hasn't done anything or had any lessons. She doesn't know what the school is like. She's just been stuck in a room. "They've had all that time off during the pandemic where they've had to stare at tablets and iPads to try and get some sort of education.
The mother of the year 10 boy, who did not wish to be identified, said she had to take time out of work to collect him. She claims she was asked if she could take another student home with her as well as their parents were at work - even though she was at work too. Grace College told ChronicleLive that school shoes should be plain black and free of fashion logos to ensure consistency across the college, ensure safety and protect students from pressure to follow trends. The school said work is done with all Year 6 parents prior to children joining Grace College to make expectations clear. They said uniform was one of the important topics covered specifically at face-to-face meetings with parents for Year 6 students in July.
