Children of the Corn 2023's unusual release strategy doesn't bode well for a prequel intended to reboot Stephen King's longest lasting franchise.
After three years of release date delays, Children of the Corn’s reboot is getting a brief theater release immediately followed by a VOD in a dispiriting sign for the series. When the name Stephen King comes up in conversation, fans of genre cinema are likely to think of characters like Jack Torrance and Pennywise the Dancing Clown. However, the most successful Stephen King franchise is actually one of the author’s lesser-known properties.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While the original Children of the Corn movies are comically unpopular with critics, they have proven enduringly popular with viewers. All in all, there are eight direct sequels and a TV movie remake in the Children of the Corn canon which, for a frame of reference, is almost as many movies as Nightmare On Elm Street or Friday the 13th.
While it may seem like a good idea for Children of the Corn 2023 to arrive on VOD immediately afterward its theater run, this has not always been a good idea for movies based on King’s earlier work. The move is reminiscent of Firestarter's financially disastrous Peacock/theater debut, a strategy that saw the Zac Efron vehicle flop upon its simultaneous release in theaters and online.
Children of the Corn 2023's Release Could Secretly Be Good While there is a lot of reason for fans of the Children of the Corn franchise to be let down by the bizarre release of the much-anticipated reboot, this might not be entirely bad news for the series. If Children of the Corn 2023 is getting a theater release to qualify for awards, that would explain its swift jump to VOD.
