In an age of dangerous Tik Tok challenges, sex-tortion and online predators, an area cybercrimes detective urges parents to take more control over their children’s electronic devices.
Nationally recognized child cyber crimes specialist Detective Richard Wistocki said young kids are using Tik Tok, and predators go to the apps that kids are using.
Nationally recognized child cyber crimes specialist Detective Richard Wistocki spoke with parents at Homer Junior High School. If their child is becoming a victim of an internet predator, that predator will likely have about 250 other victims before being caught, Wistocki said. In the fall, school districts across the country dealt with a Tik Tok challenge in which students were encouraged to film themselves and their friends vandalizing school bathrooms, dumping soap dispensers or ripping out toilets or wall partitions.Another increasing problem is students who use social media apps to buy drugs, and parents are often unaware this is happening, he said.
If a child is talking to someone they don’t know online, parents can ask their children for the stranger to use a webcam. If the person makes excuses or covers their camera with a piece of tape to appear fuzzy or distorted, a red flag should go up, Wistocki said.
