Damian Marcano’s feature seven years in the making that will debut at SXSW this year.
The film follows restless islander Skimma as he creates and sells a potent new cannabis product while trying to evade the law and support his unborn child. The project began as a 19-minute short that Warner Bros’ Stage 13 purchased for a short form content series. When the project went into turnaround, Marcano and his producer/partner Alexa bought the rights back and shot the first season on the island of Trinidad without distribution.
When Covid hit, the filmmaker decided he had enough material to reimagine it as a feature. Alongside directing, Marcano also wrote the screenplay, shot the footage and scored the film. According to the filmmakers, Adam McKay was a fan of the short and helped to get Marcano directing gigs on his basketball seriesThe SXSW premiere is on March 11, with the online premiere on March 12.
