Cheap tumble dryer alternative recommended by Martin Lewis that could save you £200 a year

Martin Lewis has recommended a cheap alternative to using a tumble dryer, which has been revealed to be one of the biggest energy guzzling appliances at home. The Money Saving Expert founder says for those who wish to avoid turning the heating on and racking up costly energy bills, a dehumidifier could be a big help.

Dehumidifiers work by sucking moisture out of the air in your home, which can help clothes dry in a cool room. By drawing excess moisture from the air, it can also aid combating condensation, preventing mould growth and reducing damp on walls. The financial guru said this solution could save homeowners money off their energy bills as it is £200 a year cheaper than drying clothes in a tumble dryer, as reported by the Manchester Evening News. He added that dehumidifiers are approximately seven pence an hour to run - compared to a tumble dryer, which would cost £1.99 per use.Speaking about the cheap alternative on his podcast, he said: "Many dehumidifiers have different wattages, the one I checked out was 200 Watts.

"A fifth is seven pence so you're going to pay roughly seven pence per hour to run a dehumidifier at 200 watts assuming it uses full power the whole time, which is generally far far cheaper than putting the heating on. If a dehumidifier does work for you, it will definitely have lower electricity bills, but, of course, you do have the initial capital outlay of buying a dehumidifier and see how that works for you.

Homeware stores such as Dunelm and B&Q sell a variety of dehumidifiers, while online retails like Amazon also offer a range. One of the cheapest electrical humidifiers is on Amazon, for £18.99. While is selling a four pack of lavender scented moisture absorbers for £4.
