Offering cash-back rewards for purchases through PayPal and at department stores should help Chase attract significant holiday spend:

Chase Pay in the quarterly 5% cash back offer alongside mobile wallets like Apple Pay, presenting Chase Pay as an alternative to those mobile wallets, which offer in-store capabilities. But Chase's Q4 2019 offer puts Chase Pay next to PayPal and department stores, shifting the focus from mobile wallets to general and online spending.

Offering cash back for holiday shopping that begins in October could help Chase capitalize on spend from consumers who start shopping early — in turn promoting primary card status.
