The M.E.N's Adam Maidment tells the story of the revival of 'Edwardian-style posh shopping' in West Didsbury
Some 110 years ago, the Arcade on Lapwing Lane in West Didsbury was the place to go if you needed some fresh fruit, sewing supplies or a bag of penny sweets.
“But over the years, it was falling to rack and ruin. I remember in around 2008, I spoke to one of the shopkeepers and asked why they didn’t do something about the Arcade and they said none of them could agree on anything and the money needed was just too much. Speaking of the repair work, Mike explains: “There was one section where just a little bit of rusted metal was holding the glass roof up. I don’t think anyone really realised just how knackered it was. It was a danger to the public, but we rescued it.
“It’s simply the right thing at the right place,” Mike says as he looks back on how the Arcade has improved since the renovation project was complete. “If you watch the Metrolink station at 5pm, every other person will pop into one of the shops or cafes. “It’s always been a spot we’ve kept an eye on,” he explains. “Our founder, Benjamin Samson, used to work at a fishmongers on Barlow Moor Road. He had a table there where he started selling sushi as a side business - and he went on to become the head chef at Yo Sushi.
