Chaplains in Texas schools? There are worse ideas | Opinion

Chaplains are trained to protect souls, not doctrines. That is, they are taught to respect the religious heritage of the person they counsel. Even so, we would have supported the amendment to this bill that would have required schools to provide a chaplain of whatever faith tradition requested by a student. Unfortunately that failed. As did a reasonable amendment that would have required chaplains to be volunteers or privately funded. Chaplain access should also be strictly voluntary.

When an organization provides a chaplain, it communicates that the organization thinks of its members as whole people with souls, not just students, workers or patients. That kind of care is increasingly important as students are dealing with issues like gun violence on campus that invite consideration of religious ideas. Soldiers in war zones go to chaplains to talk about fear and faith. Unfortunately, American schools now have the same need.

Unfortunately, the nuance of these ideas will probably be lost in political shouting. It’s not hard to see why civil liberties groups are wary of Austin right now, given the explicit Judeo-Christian nature of the Ten Commandments push and Mayes’ bill, which directly names only the Bible as a permitted religious text.
